Australis, the person

Australis is the music project and also the artistic name adopted by its founder in his constant quest to express what cannot be said through spoken tongues.

Born in a land of ancient cultures where millenary traditions are present everywhere and thousands of years of history are part of daily life, he was exposed to music and musical instruments since birth. Noticing his early interest, and contrary to conventional wisdom, he was allowed to explore those instruments in complete freedom and without the interference of formal instruction. Aware of the fact that, in music, creativity means much more than mere interpretation and/or execution, his parents intentionally protected this natural environment providing guidance and instruction only at key moments throughout his endless musical evolution.

Everything changed forever when he reached the age of twelve and he found himself the spontaneous composer of his first original piece. Not completely aware of this milestone's meaning yet, he knew something was different. Suddenly music was no longer just a companion to his feelings; suddenly music became his feelings, the actual language through which his own emotions - not those of another musician - were being expressed. He would never go back to play music from other composers.

After that moment and during the following years he instinctively absorbed every possible musical influence around him with an uncontrollable hunger, experimenting, collection, exploring styles and genres; searching continuously for the musical grammar that best described the emotions he experienced.

As a result from this unpremeditated process he got involved in many musical acts and founded several bands during his teenager years, ranging from Andean folklore to electro pop, from spiritual choir to hard rock, from solo pianist to improvised jamming; always conveying his own semantics in a never-ending search for his own musical identity.

By the time he reached adulthood he had grown dissatisfied with the parameters imposed by popular music genres, finding them restrictive and confining. The semi-famous status reached by some of the bands he founded however distracted him for several years from his own original musical intentions. This changed a few years later when his father passed away.

Awaken by that painful loss and reconsidering his whole life, he decided to change his approach to music to what it has been when he was a small boy composing his first pieces; to concentrate in the essential aspects of life instead of allowing ephemeral glamor to distract him, tampering with sensibility and with the ability to really feel.

This decision, together with his discontent towards popular music's limiting room for expression, translated into a shift to what he considered much more meaningful and open styles; genres with wider spaces for emotional expression where the heart can speak honestly. This desire formally took shape in August 2004.

In the present Australis lives with his wife and children in a quiet town at the Rocky Mountains' feet, in Utah, United States; where he composes, records and produces all of his music. ~
